South Africa Vs. Tanzania

Country: South Africa. Region: Africa. Population: 59,312,107. Total COVID Deaths: 3,971. Went on Full Lockdown. Required to WEAR masks!

Country: Tanzania. Region: Africa. Population: 59,727,695. Total COVID Deaths: 21. No Lockdown. Mask Wearing Is BANNED!

Two comparatively similar countries on a number of dimensions. Can we say that the differences are attributable to the fact that in one country they wear masks and in the other they don't? Maybe!

Because, well, actually, the wearing of masks — unlike in South Africa where it has been mandated — has been banned in Tanzania. Boy oh boy! Now, how are we going to respond to that one?

Hmm! Let's take a look at the Philippines. In the Philippines wearing a mask is mandated, and not wearing a mask might get you shot, and so people are definitely wearing them. https://www.dw.com/en/man-shot-dead-for-flouting-coronavirus-rules/a-53018149 But now they have over 50,000 cases and 1,372 deaths. In Vietnam, where wearing a mask was also mandated, there were only about 300 cases and zero deaths. So both these countries required the wearing of masks! So why the exponential differences?

I think there is a lot more to it than just wearing a mask. I have noticed that people always tend to want to simplify the complex, and then on the contrary, to want to complicate the simple.

“They conceive a certain theory, and everything has to fit into that theory. If one little fact will not fit it, they throw it aside. But it is always the facts that will not fit in that are significant.” ― Agatha Christie, Death on the Nile
