82% of Hospitalized COVID Patients Had Vitamin D Deficiency

A study of 216 COVID-19 hospitalized patients in Spain showed that 82% who were not already taking a vitamin D supplement were deficient in vitamin D. The deficiency was especially pronounced in men.

Study authors noted that patients who had been taking supplements prior to admission “had slightly more favorable outcomes” than those who didn’t take supplements.

The study also noted that there is “compelling evidence” for an association between low vitamin D levels and HIV, hepatitis C and influenza. “While the researchers reported a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in hospitalized COVID-19 patients compared to the control group, they did not find an association between vitamin D levels and the severity of the disease, such as the need for ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, or even death,” CTV News said.
